thursday night in house music event 7-9pm
Bobby Seigetsu Avstreih has been performing and teaching shakuhachi for almost 30 years.
He plays the music of the ancient tradition known as Sui-Zen ("blowing meditation"), with legendary pieces dating back almost 1,000 years. This is the only musical form associated with the practice of Zen Buddhism. He calls his programs "Music of Wind and Water" and weaves short tales and both ancient and contemporary poetry around the selections to help illuminate their inner meanings.
He has performed at museums, universities, cultural centers and Asian festivals throughout the US, in Japan and Korea. He studied in Kyoto and New York City with Kurahashi Yoshio, Sensei and Ronnie Nyogetsu Seldin, and received his certification name, Seigetsu, at Ki-Sui-An Dojo in 1987. Newly settled in Mesa, he is an "Artist-in-Residence" at the Japanese Friendship Garden in Phoenix.
